If it was up to me, everyone would get
full basic coverage with pretty draconian reimbursement rates (start with Medicare rates and crank them way back). Providers would be free to accept the rates or not. That’s where Employer sponsored insurance would / could come in. Some providers would optimize around efficiency and throughput and could survive on the basic reimbursement rates with lower levels of service and longer wait times. Others would provide a higher level of care for a cost. This could be an employer sponsored benefit and I see no reason insurers couldn’t participate. But if not... I don’t think we can hamstring our policy to protect a single industry.
